portable hardness
MES offers several types of portable hardness tests for field analysis of structures, pipelines, or other large components. Hardness tests are used to verify the heat treatment of a part or to determine if a material has the properties necessary for its intended use. Field hardness testing can also tell you if a material microstructure has been altered by a high temperature event, such as a fire.
Hardness testing is the resistance of a material to permanent indentation. MES typically provides field testing with Leeb, Ames Rockwell, Eddy Current, or Telebrineller instruments. These tests can be performed on low-high carbon steels, cast iron, stainless steel, cast aluminum, and copper.
For the Leeb portable hardness test, an impact body, which is equipped with tungsten carbide, impacts into the work piece and rebounds back. The rebound and impact velocities are measured by the integrated permanent magnet, which will produce directly proportional voltage with the impact velocity.
The Ames Portable Hardness test is an analog Rockwell tester that uses a traditional diamond indenter and ball penetrator for measuring the hardness in Rockwell regular and superficial scales.
Telebrineller hardness measurements are a direct comparison to a known physical reference and are not subject to inaccuracies due to alloy phases, which make it an ideal test for cast materials.
