IMPACT RESISTANCE Testing
Impact resistance testing, such as Charpy and Izod impact tests, measures the amount of energy absorbed by a material during fracture. The test involves striking a notched or V-notch specimen with a pendulum hammer and measuring the amount of energy absorbed by the specimen during fracture. The energy absorbed indicates the material's ability to resist fracture and absorb impact forces.

Testing is often performed at various temperatures to determine the ductile to brittle transformation temperature.
Since the occurrence of flaws is typically not avoidable, fracture toughness is an important material property. Charpy impact testing is valuable in determining whether there is a danger of catastrophic failure when a material is impacted.
